Sept. 16 Free Flu Shot Saturday Nears

You may consider it a bit early to start thinking about getting a flu shot, but Farragut Rotarians are busy planning for the 2017 annual Free Flu Shot Saturday in Farragut. The date is Sept. 16 and again this year we will be setting up shop, so to speak, in the cafeteria at Farragut High School.

Members of Farragut Rotary again will be working with Dr. Charlie Barnett (a former club member) and his medical team of nurses and nursing students. Rotarians handle the administrative duties and logistics inside the Farragut High cafeteria and also work in the parking lot. Nurses are available to give “drive-by” injections to people who are physically unable to walk inside for a shot. Rotarians also will be assisting at six other locations – Carter High, West High, Austin-East, South-Doyle Middle and Halls High schools.

Farragut Rotarian Mark Bialik again will be coordinating the Rotary team in Farragut, which usually includes a few spouses and children. The doors will open at 8 a.m. or earlier if the doctors and nurses have their syringes and needles ready. The event will run until noon or when everyone has been vaccinated or the vaccine supply has been used.

The Centers for Disease Control is recommending that people should get their shots by the end of October at the latest for what is expected to be an early flu season, which runs Oct. 2017 through May 2018. CDC is recommending that people get vaccinated as soon as the vaccine is ready … like on Sept. 16.

Rotary Youth Exchange Students: The club’s Inbound Exchange student arrived last week from his home in Portoviejo, Manabi, Ecuador – Daniel Flor. He is 16 and in the junior class at Webb School. His first host family is John and Lisa

Howard and their son, Luke.

Four days after he arrived we said so long to Webb rising sophomore Leoni Kunz. Leoni is the sister of Florentin Kunz, who was our youth exchange student to Finland two years ago. Leoni will spend her Rotary Exchange year in Karlsruhe, Germany, near the French border. Her parents are Brigitte and Christian Kunz.

Newsy Member Notes: Rotarian the Rev. David Bluford, chaplain at Park West Hospital, is hanging up his whistle after 20 years as a high school football official in Knoxville. He and wife Mary are moving from Lenoir City to their new home in Jefferson County … In late July, past president Ron Lawrence guided his champion Tennessee Walking Horse “In Ted’s Image” to the Fine Harness Champion of the 77th Red Carpet Show of the South in Pulaski, Tennessee. This major competition is hosted by the Rotary Club of Pulaski.
