If you can’t get to the library, we’ll come to you! Did you know that the Knox County Public Library’s Books for the Homebound program delivers library materials to the homes of our neighbors who are unable to come to the library without assistance due to temporary or permanent disability and have no one who can pick up materials for them? Our reference librarians work with homebound patrons to create a profile of preferred materials. It can be books, books on CD, music or movies on DVD. We will make every effort to fill specific requests, and if they are unavailable at the moment, selections will be made based on reading preferences.

Volunteers deliver the books straight to the homes from the closest library location. We typically serve about 50 people per month, some of whom live in assisted living facilities. Our volunteers are vital to the program. We wouldn’t be able to offer the service without volunteer help.

Joe Shackleford has volunteered for the Books for the Homebound program for 12 years. After serving 25 years as a pilot in the Air Force, he settled down in Knoxville and started delivering books. “It seems to me that we are delivering a whole lot more than just books,” he said “We’re really delivering windows onto the world for the folks who can’t get out.
