Knoxville quilters make a splash

Several quilters from the Knoxville area were recognized for their creativity and workmanship at the Smoky Mountain Quilters of Tennessee (SMQ) 41st Quilt Show and Competition August 5-6 at the Knoxville Expo Center.

Best in Show, Large Quilt and Excellence in Hand Workmanship awards went to Linda Roy of Knoxville. The event featured more than 200 stunning quilts and approximately $6,000 in awards. Other local winners included:

Large Pieced Quilt – Team:

  • Honorable Mention – Lynda Wallace, Knoxville

Large Appliqued and/or Mixed Techniques Quilt – Team:

  • Honorable Mention – Ann Replogle, Knoxville

Modern Quilts:

  • 2nd – Knoxville Modern Quilt Guild, Knoxville
  • Honorable Mention – Elizabeth Rea, Knoxville

SMQ Members Only Sunshine Challenge:

  • 1st – Nancy Watson, Knoxville
  • 2nd – Chris Calhoun, Knoxville
  • Honorable Mention – Leslie Hinson, Knoxville

SMQ Members Only Just for Fun Challenge:

  • 1st – Celia Shanks, Knoxville
  • 2nd – Nancy Watson, Knoxville
  • 3rd – Deborah Russell, Knoxville
  • Honorable Mention – Mali Glazer, Knoxville
  • Honorable Mention – Sally Sante, Knoxville

Other Special Awards:

  • Surface Design – Eileen Black-Hampton, Knoxville
  • Traditional Design – Rose Ann Smith, Knoxville

The Smoky Mountain Quilters of Tennessee typically meet on the first Tuesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. at the Messiah Lutheran Church at the intersection of Papermill Drive and Kingston Pike in Knoxville. SMQ strives to advance the knowledge and appreciation of the craftsmanship, artistic expression and historical significance of quiltmaking; to sponsor and support charitable projects to provide encouragement to those in need; and to promote friendship through shared activities. The guild’s approximately 100 members range from novice to master quilters in diverse quilt styles, including traditional and art quilts, complex and minimalist modern designs, miniatures and bed-sized, and hand- or machine-stitched.
