Knox County’s trash and recycling centers will be closed on Wednesdays effective January 11, 2023. This change in operating hours is “not temporary,” said Drew Thurman, who oversees solid waste policy and planning.

Knox County operates seven centers across the county. All are open 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays and 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays. Centers are closed on Sundays. Together, the centers average 40,000 users a week. Knox County residents can drop off trash and items for recycling.

Wednesdays are the slowest day and Knox County already closes the centers on one Wednesday per quarter for maintenance and staff training.

Knox County, like many private businesses, has staff vacancies. The county’s website shows 40 open positions with most in the Sheriff’s Office. Knox County Schools operates an independent HR department.
