Susano family gives back

Sandra ClarkUncategorized

Three generations of Knoxville’s Susano family were on hand Saturday to serve food to first responders at a midday event at the downtown fire hall sponsored by Larsen Jay of Random Acts of Flowers.

Well, the senior Susano probably just came to eat. Charles Susano Jr. has served on the state Court of Appeals since 1994. He practiced law and played at politics for 20 years before that.

“You know you’re getting old,” he said, “when you see buildings torn down that you saw being built.” He referenced the former University Center which was built in the mid-1960s for the 20,000 or so UT students enrolled then and is being rebuilt as a Student Union at double the size for roughly the same student population today.

Both he and I were around when the old student center replaced the Ellis & Ernest Drug Store that sat for years on the corner of Cumberland Avenue across from the law school. That drug store and a used book store next door served the needs of students of our vintage quite adequately. Of course, our drug of choice was black coffee.

As we caught up, and I explained this website, KnoxTNToday.com. “If you ever retire, come over and write for us,” I offered. Susano is known for often witty and always well-written opinions. The judge grinned. “If I ever retire, I may just do what you’re doing.”

Start a website? Yikes! Just what this town needs. Another geezer website!
