Weather break speeds repairs at county parks

Parks and Recreation employees are taking advantage of the break in the heat to make some repairs. Carpenter crews fixed gates at John Tarleton Park, built new signposts at Mascot Park, and put up a new sign at Corryton Park. Heavy equipment operators spent a good part of the week mowing and trimming trails and oversaw the maintenance of some of our machinery. Electricians chased down and fixed a few electrical issues we had at John Tarleton, and Dylan Evans put in a new outlet at the press box, two new breakers in the breaker box, and a new junction box on one of the light poles at Concord Park. And our lone plumber fixed some issues at Tarleton and installed a new water fountain at Ball Camp Park.

Crews also put down some asphalt resurfacing to cover up graffiti at Carl Cowen Park and started pressure washing the fence at Beverly Golf Course — that project is expected to take 3-4 days.

Engineering and Public Works crews have been working to clean up after last week’s storms. This week, they focused on repairing a separated storm drain pipe on Dutchtown Road. They also tore down and removed two houses that had processed through the dirty lot process.

As a reminder, a portion of the Halls Greenway between Norris Freeway to Andersonville Pike will be closed until Monday, September 13, so KUB can rebuild a section of a high voltage transmission line.

Michael Spain and Cricket Solomon were crowned the respective winners of the men’s and women’s homerun derby events that took place Tuesday and Wednesday at the Karns Sports Park.

Knox County also is hosting a “free sunset yoga” event in honor of World Heart Day on Wednesday, Sept. 29, at 7:30 p.m. at John Tarleton Park. Just bring a yoga mat or towel!

Here are a few photos of work around the parks:
