Take a deep dive into the ‘Marble City’

Suzanne CadaDowntown, Our Town Arts

The Knoxville History Project presents The Deepest Origins of the Marble City on Tuesday, July 12, at 6 p.m. at Maple Hall downtown.

This free event features guest speaker James Wedekind, a geologist who will explain why East Tennessee rocks are so different and how they made Knoxville famous. A Knoxville native, Wedekind will cover several hundred million years of the history of Tennessee marble, from its formation during the Ordovician Period to the mid-19th century, when it became a major part of Knoxville’s economy. The astonishing variety of local marble excited visitors to the 1876 Philadelphia World’s Fair, when it began changing the look of American architecture.

Drinks and bar food available for purchase. Maple Hall is located at 414 S. Gay Street, 37902. For more info, go here.
