Neema Avashia will keynote the 9th annual Young Creative Writer’s Workshop, set for 9-3 on Saturday, October 28, 2023, at the Strawberry Plains Campus of Pellissippi State Community College.
The workshop is designed for area high school students and all Pellissippi State students, but open to the community with workshops in fiction, poetry, songwriting, publication and craft-focused/genre specific topics. A free lunch is provided.
Avashia’s first book, Another Appalachia: Coming Up Queer and Indian in a Mountain Place, was published in 2022 and named the best LGBTQ memoir of 2022 by BookRiot.
Additional activities include a quilting bee, an Appalachian monster costume contest, a “Granny Witch” folk medicine station, the Writer’s Room and the showcase at day’s end.

- Appalachian Myths and Monsters with Jody Bryant of ETSU
- Haints, Haunts and Horrors in the Holler with Grant Mincy
- Publishing workshops with Terry Shaw and Brad Lifford of Howling Hills Publishing
- Music by WestWeird
- Fiction with Charles Dodd White
- Poetry with Kierstyn Lamour.
