North Knoxville residents came out Sept. 8 to help clean up their community at the first North Knoxville Community Cleanup hosted by Keep Knoxville Beautiful.

“This is our largest cleanup effort for Keep Knoxville Beautiful in the North Knoxville area,” said Alanna McKissack, executive director. “Each year we choose a community of the year, and this year it is North Knoxville.”

This community-wide cleanup began at Edgewood Park, where volunteers picked up their supplies and then went to their own neighborhoods to collect litter and debris. Keep Knoxville Beautiful provided the gloves, safety vests, litter pickers and garbage bags.

There were several children present at the event participating in the Smoke-Free Knoxville Cigarette Butt Challenge. Participants picked up as many cigarette butts as they could around the park. Every participant received a prize for their efforts courtesy of the Knox County Health Department.

After the cleanup, volunteers were able to take advantage of discounts at Keep Knoxville Beautiful restaurant partners Elkmont Exchange and Central Filling Station.

Eli Glenn and Camden Jackson help with the community cleanup.
