Norris quilt up for auction at Christ UMC

You’ll have a chance to bid on a masterpiece at Christ United Methodist Church‘s Fall Fun Fest, set for 6-8:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 26.

But it’s not the kind of art you hang on the wall. It’s the kind you snuggle under on a chilly autumn night. The quilt, machine-pieced and hand-quilted by Halls native and Christ UMC member Millie Norris, has a fall theme. She contributes two each year to a church festival: one in fall and one in the spring.

Proceeds from the silent auction will go to church building improvement projects.

Norris started quilting about 15 years ago, making quilts for the church, for family and friends, and even taking commissions. Her love of the hobby is a bit of a surprise.

“My grandmother used to quilt, and I would think that’s the most boring thing I ever saw,” said Norris. “She taught me to sew. But I got into it, and I just love it. I’ve got a quilt going about all the time.”

Norris creates the designs herself and often pieces from fabric she’s collected over the years. The jack-o-lantern on this quilt is a piece she’s had in storage for a long time.

“It came in handy when I needed a fall quilt,” she said.

The quilt will be on display during the Union County Heritage Festival’s quilt show Saturday, Oct. 6.

Millie and Ed Norris display the full quilt in their home in Halls.
