Law enforcement does us proud

Knoxvillians owe a debt of thanks to the uniformed officers who stood in the hot sun for hours Saturday – most of them dressed in full riot gear – and reacted with firmness, restraint and even humor to the goings-on around them, handed out bottled water to those who showed up to support the Confederate monument on 17th Street and those who came to counter protest.

The Knoxville Police Department’s planning and performance were flawless, and they were backed up by officers from the Knox County Sheriff’s Office, the Tennessee Highway Patrol, the Oak Ridge Police Department and other public employees. Streets were blocked and nobody got into the protest area without being searched.

An estimated 3,000 people crammed into the designated space, with only one arrest and no incidents worth talking about.
So thank you KPD, KCSO, THP and ORPD. You did us proud.
