Knox CPA slams GOP tax plan, stirs social media storm

A Facebook post written by a prominent Knoxville CPA about the new income tax bills pending in Congress has stirred conversation and controversy.

Jenny Hines, president of Hines and Company PC, studied in continuing education the House and Senate bills waiting to be reconciled and approved. What she learned left her so frustrated that she fired off a lengthy Facebook warning.

“After spending the last four hours in continuing education learning about both the House and Senate bills for new tax legislation, I can say with 100 percent honesty and clarity that the ordinary American making anywhere between $30,000 and $400,000 a year should prepare for the most disgusting and reprehensible shellacking ever delivered to the good people of this country.

“If you wish to believe Fox News and your representatives, that’s fine. Believe all that you want. And while you are at it, start believing in Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny again because you’re going to need all the help you can get. …”

Two days later, her original post had been shared 249 times, drawing comment from a national audience (including a testy exchange with a rather defensive Republican Congressional aide), so she doubled down on her message:

“Many have accused me of being a Democrat (heaven forbid!!!) and a patent liar. It is difficult to argue with this article unless you want to discredit one of the highest-ranked business schools in the nation (and why not since higher education is definitely under attack by this Congress)…”
