Henry Shiflett DO is an infectious disease specialist who has joined four other providers at Knoxville Infectious Disease Consultants, a member of Covenant Medical Group. The physicians and staff at KIDC have provided comprehensive infectious disease diagnostic and management services to the greater Knoxville area since 1985.
An Infectious Disease specialist is a physician who is trained to prevent, diagnose and treat a variety of infections throughout the human body. This ranges from a sinus infection to HIV and neurological or cardiovascular infections, and can involve bacteria, viruses, fungi or parasites.
Dr. Shiflett is a Knoxville native who completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Tennessee, followed by medical school at Lincoln Memorial University. He completed his residency at UT and a fellowship studying infectious disease at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, SC.
“Public health and epidemiology have become much better known to the general public over the last 18 months,” he said. “The prevention of disease has always been happening in the background of healthcare: from infectious disease prevention to improving the length and quality of life, ID specialists also help organizations and communities make informed decisions.
“Our most powerful medicine by far is prevention. The most important things you can do to prevent disease are wash your hands frequently, cover your cough, use safe sex practices, and get all recommended vaccinations. Because there are so many people who could benefit from our expertise, I hope to complement the other specialists in this area and increase our accessibility to patients.”
Dr. Shiflett says he is excited to serve patients in his community and make a positive impact.
