High school students picking up skills at trade camp

Pellissippi State’s Strawberry Plains campus is hosting Boys & Girls Clubs camps for students from area high schools. Students will attend five technical training camps from 8:30 a.m.-noon July 13-15 and July 20-22.

The camps provide educational and career exposure to young people, who could choose from camps focused on welding, engineering, computer technology, nursing or criminal justice. Computer technology, called Pi Camp, will be a two-week commitment for students.

  • July 13-15: welding, engineering and computer technology
  • July 20-22: welding (second group of students), nursing, criminal justice, the second week of computer technology (same students as first week)

Wednesday, July 14

Today’s Kid A’ Riffic Fun in the Park from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. has changed location to Tyson Park at 2351 Kingston Pike due to parking availability. The event was originally scheduled for Adair Park in Fountain City, but with the great attendance the city has been having, Adair does not have adequate parking. These free events which began in June run through the end of July and include family activities geared toward children age 2-10 every Wednesday at a different park each week. Thursday, July 15                              

Nature Nuggets: Water Ways, 10 a.m. at Ijams Nature Center. Cost is $6. Beat the heat by exploring how water works at one of Ijams’ Creeks. Create boats, build dams, and discover aquatic creatures together. Children 2-4. For more info or to register go here or call 865-577-4717, ext. 127.

Joy of Music Youth Music School: Dining for Joy fundraiser at 6 p.m. in the Marble Hall at Lakeshore Park. Cost is $45 per person and includes dinner from Get’cha Po-Boy Louisiana Style. Proceeds benefit the Joy of Music School, a nonprofit organization providing free music lessons and instruments to financially disadvantaged, at-risk children and teens.
