Halls Middle PTA to host first-ever golf tournament

Times are tough for school organizations that rely on fundraising. For parents, it seems like every month there’s a new fundraiser. Candy bars, wrapping paper, cookie dough, the list goes on and on.

That’s why Halls Middle School’s PTA is trying something they’ve never tried before: a fundraising golf tournament. They’re trying to take their fundraisers to just two per year, the tournament and candy bars, to lessen the annoyance factor for parents.

PTA vice president Diane Wolard has been involved in PTA since her kids were in elementary school. She’s been in the HMS PTA for three years. Wolard said the money the PTA raises goes right back into the school. Last summer, the PTA repainted all the school bathrooms, and this year they contributed funds for materials in the new personalized learning program at HMS. They also do a once-a-month luncheon for the teachers, and many other projects.

“The PTA supports everyone at the middle school, the students and the staff,” Wollard said. “We want to enable our kids to have the best education. That’s our sole purpose. There’s just some things that the state doesn’t furnish, and we want to help fund the things that the school can’t afford on its own.”

The golf tournament will be held Saturday, March 31, at Three Ridges Golf Course. The format is four-person best ball, with additional prizes for longest drive, closest to the pin, and a putting contest. Cost is $265 per team. There will also be a raffle for door prizes. Breakfast and lunch will be provided.

The PTA has a goal of 20 teams and at least 18 hole sponsors. So far, six teams have signed up. They also have need for donated prizes.

Hole sponsors so far include: Tindell’s Inc., Flowers by Bob, Myers Orthodontics, Zaxby’s of Halls, Rusty Wallace Honda, U.S. Rep. John Duncan Jr., the Wroblewski family, Woodford and Associates, Tennessee Brokerage Agency, Robert G. Campbell and Associates, Service One Contracting, Beaty Chevrolet, Halls Cleaners, Ashley Furniture, Ray Varner Ford and Pro Care Tires.
