Washington Presbyterian Church’s Apple Festival on Saturday drew even out-of-state visitors. The annual fundraiser benefits church missions, this year Morgan-Scott Project, Wesley House, Wallace Mobile Medical and Local Presbyterian Aid.
The fried apple pies are usually the first food product to disappear, and the home-canned relish and pickles are close behind.
The Mumbillies
The Mumbillies fiddle band entertained with a sweet rendition of The Tennessee Waltz and other, faster music. “We’re probably the oldest old-time fiddle band in the area,” said one member. “We’ve been together 40 years.”
Sisters Joyce Stewart (hammer dulcimer) and Jan Hudson (mountain dulcimer) played quietly in a far corner of the festival site. Hudson said her job is easier: “She’s got 89 strings, while I’ve just got three.”

The lunch line was long for barbecue ribs or a hot dog with all the fixings. Sammy Sawyer had his Barney Fife car at the entrance, and he helped carry the apple pies forward for judging.
All-in-all a beautiful day in the country for fellowship and fundraising for four good causes.
