Deadline for SOUP proposals is Aug. 4

Sunday, Aug. 4, is the deadline to submit a proposal to vie for funding at the next Knoxville SOUP.

Knoxville SOUP is a grassroots organization that holds quarterly events at rotating locations to help raise money for projects that will benefit the community – any community in Knox County. Neighborhood and community groups, nonprofits, businesses and individuals are welcome to submit proposals to put their projects up for consideration.

The next SOUP micro-funding event will take place Tuesday, Aug. 13, at the South Knoxville Community Center, 522 Maryville Pike. Up to four projects are chosen to present at each event. Attendees listen to the brief proposals, then dine on a meal of soup, salad and dessert, discuss the projects and vote for their favorite.

The project with the most votes wins the cash from the door. A donation of $5 per person is suggested for entry.

At the most recent SOUP, Sleeves4Needs walked away with $1,050 to fund their Free Summer Lawn Care project, which serves seniors and people with disabilities. Sleeve4Needs needed money for mowing equipment and supplies.

Even projects that don’t win the door donations often benefit from presenting at SOUP. The presentation by Bundled in Love Blanket Ministry, which creates and supplies blankets for patients at East Tennessee Children’s Hospital as well as for children who are caught up in abuse and trauma situations, inspired one SOUP attendee to mail a $50 check specifically to their cause.

The SOUP proposal application consists of four simple questions and is available at www.knoxvillesoup.org. For the Aug. 13 event, doors will open at 6 p.m. and presentations will begin at 6:30 p.m.
