Fountain City resident David Bollinger recently received the Bronze Medal, the highest honor awarded by the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

In his role as Primary Examiner with the USPTO, Bollinger examines patent applications to determine whether a patent should be issued for an invention.

The citation Bollinger received noted his superior performance in the examination of patent applications in the field of article handling.

Bollinger’s work has focused on a subset of article handling, “sheet feeding or delivering.” The USPTO’s definition for this class of technology is, “Means for moving an individual sheet from a stack of sheets or positioning the individual sheet with respect to a location where the sheet is operated upon or moving or positioning the individual sheet after having been operated upon.” This describes, for example, the way paper moves through a copy machine.

Bollinger has been with the USPTO for 33 years. He and wife Chrisi reside in Fountain City and attended the USPTO awards ceremony in Washington, D.C., in September.
