Jay FitzEast Knox, Our Town Youth

Austin-East Alumni Dancers will present TranscenDance: Celebrating Our Black Butterfly Malaika Guthrie at the Bijou Theatre this Saturday, April 30, at 7 p.m. Performers will include current Austin-East High School students, alumni students and community leaders.

TranscenDance is a retirement celebration for Guthrie to celebrate her 28 years of service in the Knox County Schools system. Guthrie teaches numerous styles of African dance, tap and modern dance. Over the years she has traveled to dance conferences throughout the U.S. with busloads of students to expose them to professional artists from all around the world.

Over 100 of Guthrie’s former and current students are coming together to celebrate her teaching, being a mother to all, and servicing her community with love. The presentation shows the journey of how Guthrie’s students grew beyond their expectations blossoming into the butterflies she shaped them to be. Her story will be told through dance, drums and culture. This beautiful work of art is inspired by Guthrie and exemplifies the discipline and technique she instilled in her students.

Tickets are $15-$20 and can be purchased here. The Bijou Theatre is located at 803 S. Gay Street.

TranscenDance Leadership Team consists of two of Malaika’s former students, Jenaiya Coleman and LaShaundra Lenior, as well as her eldest daughter, Analecia Guthrie.
