Fitness for Freedom – Ukraine

Jay FitzOur Town Health, West Knoxville

A Bearden business has created a way to help the Ukrainian people while doing your health a favor.

Andrew Henderson, owner of Fitness Together, 9430 S. Northshore Drive, and his trainers will lead free group workouts Sunday, March 6, at 1, 2:30 and 4 p.m. In return, they ask participants to consider donating to Direct Relief’s Ukraine Fund.

“If you’ve turned on the TV or radio at all you know about the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and this has been weighing heavily on me,” Henderson wrote to clients.

“I can’t help but think about the people in Ukraine and what they must be going through this very second. The bravery and strength these people are showing as they defend themselves is inspiring, and I feel very moved to do something concrete to support them. I hope you’ll consider helping.”

Cameron Brooks, REA Realtor who also works out at Fitness Together, is supporting Sunday’s effort by emailing friends and associates. (Cameron is also raising money for Young-Williams Animal Center by selling pies for Pi Day, but that’s another story.)

Here’s what to expect on Sunday:

Total body workouts: Cardio, strength and flexibility at different stations spread throughout the studio. Exercises can be done at any intensity and will be designed so that just about anyone can do them.

Safety: For those not comfortable training inside with others, there will be an alternate outdoors workout.

Why Direct Relief – Ukraine: “Although they support causes in the U.S. and around the world, donations can be earmarked directly to support the people in Ukraine. They are the highest-rated charity on Charity Navigator (100/100 score) so I know the funds will be used properly,” Henderson wrote.

“Bring family and friends,” he said, asking only that participants text him at 865-357-8663 to let him know the time and number attending so he can plan. Those who cannot attend but want to donate can do so via check mailed to Direct Relief with “Ukraine” written in the memo area, Fitness Together, 11521 Kingston Pike, Knoxville, TN 37934. Or donate with a credit card here.
