Sisters at work at The Painted Woods

The Painted Woods is a story of courage, creativity and persistence.
The business is owned by sisters Mary Ann Miller and Martha Dooley. Before marriage, they were named Woods. When they started painting furniture, The Painted Woods seemed like a natural fit.
Dooley is a weekend worker, continuing to handle her full-time job with the Knox County Sheriff’s Office.
Miller, a Powell resident, is full-time and, until recently, was the only employee.
Clinton resident Audrey Stephens and North Knox resident Eve Kiser have joined the team as business has picked up.
The sisters opened Nov. 5 at 7716 Clinton Hwy. (on the right, headed toward Clinton). Then Mary Ann’s husband took sick and died. She had to close the store for 3-4 months.
“We lost customers, but they’re coming back,” said Dooley. The women had operated for a time at Southern Market in Bearden.
Inventory includes home decor plus an array of painted furniture – real wood, said Miller. She shops yard and estate sales to acquire merchandise. And Dooley laughs that they finally cleaned out their garages.
The 3,000 square foot warehouse with the high ceiling, large garage doors and “artistic vibe” is a perfect spot. Business neighbors have been helpful. Info: thepaintedwoods.com, Facebook or 865-227-4489.
