Kids get active at Central Baptist Playcation

It’s that time of year when it seems like every church is having Vacation Bible School. And that’s great, but for the second year in a row, Central Baptist Church of Fountain City is heading in a different direction for kids summer fun.

Playcation director Cheyenne Duffy and volunteer Taylor Smith

Instead of VBS, they’re hosting Playcation, a week of traditional VBS for ages 3 through Pre-K, and sports and active games, plus Bible study, for kindergarten through fifth grade. The response has been good, according to Playcation director and children’s ministry assistant Cheyenne Duffy. More than 120 kids registered this year, topping last year’s number by about 20.

“We thought that everyone else around us does traditional VBS, so we thought we’d offer something different,” Duffy said. “It gets kids out and moving, and it’s introduced kids to sports they weren’t interested in before.”

All Playcation attendees are studying the story of David and Goliath. The older set rotates between basketball, Ultimate Frisbee, alternative games like kickball and a life-size take on Hungry, Hungry Hippos. There is also a Bible study and craft rotation.

Duffy thanked the 76 volunteers who have helped with Playcation, which wraps up Thursday evening, June 15.
