God, the host

… As it is written, what no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the human heart conceived, what God has prepared for those who love him.” (I Corinthians 2: 9)

When I read this verse, I think of the Almighty as a host getting ready for a great party: preparing special food, building a fire in the fireplace, having a string quartet in the corner to provide music, and lighting candles on the table.

Except what God prepares for us on “that great getting’ up mornin’” will be like nothing we have ever experienced!

Just to be in the heavenly realms will be beyond our imagining. And to see God face to face is something that will fill us with awe.

Paul’s writing in I Corinthians says it best: the human heart cannot conceive of being in the presence of God!

However, this text also implies that God will care for us here on earth as well! God will be with us, no matter what happens: in good times and bad, in joy and in sorrow.

There are folks who want to sing in the heavenly choir, and a few I happen to have known through years, who want to direct it!

As delightful as all of this sounds, however, we have work to do here, before we cross over. There are wrongs to be righted, wounds to be tended and healed, lessons to be learned, and hurts to be forgiven.

All of this may sound like a large order, but the most important part of it is this: we need to be ready and willing to do what we are called to do: whether it be small or large, known to those around you or not, easy or hard.

Then, God will welcome us home joyfully!
