From gala to golf, Women’s League keeps boosting Halls

The Halls Crossroads Women’s League is hoping this year’s fundraising effort will be a hole in one as they change tracks from an annual gala to a golf tournament. Set for a shotgun start at 1 p.m. Monday, Aug. 14, at Beaver Brook Country Club in Halls, the Halls Has It Golf Tournament will help fund the League’s charitable and community-boosting efforts throughout the year.

The League’s service tally is long. Just to hit the high notes, they provide two college scholarships each year for Halls High School students, provide clothing to families in need through their clothes closet, pick up litter along the highway, and sponsor a float  in the Knoxville Veterans Day Parade, along with a veterans lunch afterwards.

But trust me, that’s just a small portion of their good work. Since starting in 2005, the League has contributed volunteer hours and monetary donations to Halls valued at $1,700,991.30.

The League’s annual fundraising gala has been held at the Foundry since 2005, and League vice president Susan Smith said it was time for a change.

“What the Women’s League is about is to help the Halls community, and what better way than to keep it in Halls and get the whole community involved?” she said. “All this money stays in the community to help when there’s a need.”

It’s been a learning experience for the group, but Smith said everyone “has gotten their feet wet.”

“And everyone’s excited that they’re not going to have to put on a tie or black heels,” she added.

The League is still accepting donations, sponsors and teams, and the community is welcome to attend the event and cheer on their favorite golfers. The state champion Halls High School golf team will even be in attendance at one of the holes to meet the teams.

Format is a four-person scramble, and special prizes will also be awarded, including a Ford Escort donated by Ray Varner Ford if anyone gets a hole in one on the 10th hole.

Other donors and sponsors include (but are not limited to) Sofas and More, DeRoyal Industries, Tindell’s, Scrumps Cupcakes, Dippin Donuts and Pioneer Heat and Air.
