CAK grad wins golf championship

Sophia Schubert, 21, of Oak Ridge won the 117th U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship on Sunday in Chula Vista, California. A rising senior at the University of Texas, Schubert birdied the first hole on her way to a win over Albane Valenzuela, 19, of Stanford, in the final.

Schubert played prep golf at Christian Academy of Knoxville, winning the state championship in 2010, 2012 and 2013. She won her final junior event by 15 strokes, according to information from the Longhorn website. Her parents are Bill and Delisa Schubert.
